If you’re looking for Armani, Hugo Boss or Dolce and Gabbana, you won’t find it. However, if you’re looking for Carhartt (for kids and adults), Dickies, Round House bibs (made in the USA) and Levi’s, you’re in luck. You won’t find many shoes with tassles or made with the finest Italian leather. You will find boots and work shoes that can withstand the toughest weather, the dirtiest jobs, the harshest conditions. And keep your feet warm and dry (especially when paired with socks from Burlington, Wigwam or Gold Toe).
As Ray Zalinsky (car parts king played by Dan Ackroyd in one of the great American movies ever made-- “Tommy Boy “) proclaimed “I make car parts for the American Working Man.” Ray may make the car parts, but West Side Clothing sells the American Working Man (and Woman) clothes.
That is just what you’d expect of a store that catered to the coal miners and railroad folks of a young Bloomington/Normal. A visit to West Side Clothing is like taking a stroll back in time. This isn't a mall retail store and never will be.
Everybody at Clark Taminger’s family-run shop -- marking its 100th year in business -- is friendly. Taminger thinks the business has survived because of attention to good service. While its age alone makes the store historic, items displayed inside add to the sense of yesteryear. The attention to history, together with the emphasis on service and friendliness, is part of what makes his shop -- specializing in work clothes, work shoes and casual big and tall -- unique.
The store sells a lot of jeans, carrying the Levi, Lee, Carhartt and Dickies brands. Work shoes including the Wolverine, Carolina and Thorogood brands are also big sellers.
West Side Clothing is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
