$3.75 Gift Card good for admission to the January 23rd game vs. the Wisconsin Badgers Game Time 6pm
At 6pm, on Sunday, Jan. 23 the ice in the Coliseum will be covered with red. No, not blood (although there MIGHT be a little of that on the ice, along with some teeth). It will be the battle of the reds—Wisconsin vs. Illinois State. Can a Redbird beat a Badger? You betcha, and it will be something you’ll definitely want to see.
Warning: ISU hockey is addictive and after seeing this game you may find yourself wearing mostly red, yelling Reggie and just being a lot more fun. Attending this hockey game should only be attempted by the fun-loving who love to party and have a good time. Knowledge of hockey not required, but the desire to have a good time is.
Mark you calendar and be sure to come out and Spread the Red on Sunday, Jan. 23 as our very own Illinois State University Redbirds as they take on the Wisconsin Badgers with a 6 pm face-off.
National ranked at #8, the ISU hockey team will aim to send the Badgers back to the cheese state with their tail between their legs. After sweeping Wisconsin at home two seasons ago, the Redbirds encountered a much-improved Badger team in Madison last season where the two teams split. #13 Wisconsin returns to Bloomington for a Sunday evening game, after playing the University of Illinois, the previous two nights.
Head coach Brian Corley is pretty pumped about his team’s performance this year. With an exciting mix of 15 veterans and 9 rookies. Veterans include scoring stars such as MACHA Gold Offensive Player of the Year Runner-Up Eric Brown and Redbirds points per game scoring leader Chris Drinkwater. Exciting rookies include the Chicago Fury’s AAA forward Josh Ambrosat and Northern Express CSDHL stand-out James Wietecha.
New for this semester is Ryan Dunne, formerly of the Bismarck (North Dakota) Bobcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he helped the team to a National Championship. Steve Hong returns to the lineup for the second half of the season as well. Hong lead the Redbirds in goals scored last year.
Defensively the Redbirds are anchored by five returning players, including four time High School State Champion Nick Santopoalo and AAA Chicago Mission standout Jon Luevano. The defensive core is solid, experienced and ready to show what playing together for an entire season can mean. Both of the new defensemen have resumes worth bragging about. John Leonard was voted First Team All-Conference in MACHA - Silver last season while leading the Redbird JV defense. Brian Mostyn is a University of Iowa transfer and played for their MACHA Gold Championship Team.
Of course defense starts in the net and the Redbirds have a nice balance of experience and youth. Twenty-three year old Steve Somerfield returns for his third year with the Redbirds. The leading goaltender from last season, Steve boasted 2.99 goals against average, with a 0.90 save percentage. Steve had a winning percentage of 0.78 for the Redbirds. Steve is joined by a true freshman with a ton of high level experience. Ryan Siuzdak, age 20, has played Junior A hockey for the past three years, most recently for the Peoria Mustangs of the Central States Hockey League. The Redbirds are currently 16 – 5 and are ranked 8th in the Central Region of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Follow the Birds at www.IllinoisStateHockey.com.
About Illinois State University Redbird Hockey
What’s not to like about hockey? It’s fast-moving, it’s physical, it’s known as the most Canadian of game but, ironically, the champions of the sport are Americans. Take that Canada! It is like the craft brew of college sports. Football fans and basketball fans are a dime a dozen, but a hockey fan, why, there’s a fan that you want cheering for you. And this is THE year to cheer for the Redbirds Hockey Team
This year's recruiting season was the most exciting ever for Redbird Hockey. The talent is coming to Illinois State! And with this Today’s Deal you can get to know them by purchasing a season pass for only $60 (normally a $128 value) This is a great gift for the father and/or son who like hockey, all the kids who are learning hockey, and any fan of the Hanson Brothers.
The Icebirds (as they are affectionately known) play at the spacious U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington. This state-of-the-art facility features a parking deck, comfortable stadium seating and an abundance of concession stands featuring everything from pizza to nachos to adult cold beverages of every kind.
The Redbirds play in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association. A founding member, MACHA has grown to 27 teams and two divisions, Gold and Silver. The Redbirds won the Silver Division Championship in the 2006-2007 season and moved up to Gold the following season. The Redbirds qualified for the Gold playoffs each of the past four years, but never reaching the Championship Game. The Gold Division has nine teams.
