If you’re a Food Network junkie, you know the easiest way to excite those jaded-palate judges is to go for the ice cream machine.

Jeffrey Steingarten, Amanda Freitag, Aaron Sanchez, even Chopped host Ted Allen get downright swoony when any contestant goes toward the ice cream machine.

Of course, the ice cream coming out of those shows is usually a little bit over-the-top, with flavors that include avocado, bacon and even trout.

But if you’re more of a chocolate or vanilla kind of person, if you prefer your bacon with eggs and your trout with a lemon wedge and tartar sauce, then you should visit Gene’s Ice Cream shop.

This Bloomington mainstay is located on the corner of South Main and West Miller. If you’re going a little over the 30 mph speed limit you might miss it. But turn around. It’s worth it.

Gene’s Ice Cream is one of those places that mean summer. Even though it’s March, and summer is just a hint in the air, a tease of an unseasonably warm 60 degree day followed by a day of snow, Gene’s is your promise that yes, Virginia, there WILL be a summer. It’s not your chain store ice cream with the predictable menu and the predictable flavor. It’s Brownie Delights and Strawberry Shortcake and Pecan Turtle Sundaes.

It’s the Chipwich and the hand-dipped Chocolate Covered Bananas and the Turtle Bar. It’s sundaes that take you forever to order because you have 17 times of toppings to choose from—SEVENTEEN!!!! You hover at the window, not too close because you’re still deciding, but close enough to peer in and weigh the merits of the peanut butter topping versus the hot peach. Do you mix the caramel and the chocolate and vanilla and perhaps, you daredevil you, raspberry? Do you go with a butterscotch, banana, marshmallow??

Or are 17 toppings just too much of a mind-blower? Are you unable to decide on one of the bazillion of combinations? Then perhaps you should try an Avalanche that aptly named mountain of ice cream that has been known to bend even the heartiest of plastic spoonery. Your decision tree for Avalanches has only seven branches, but it’s not an easy seven by any means. Sure, Snickers are your favorite candy bar, but Oreos are your favorite cookie. So what kind of Avalanche do you order—the Snickers or the Oreo??? Or go completely off the grid and order a Kit Kat Avalanche.

But, in the end, it’s all about the ice cream. And even there you have choices. Chocolate. Vanilla. Chocolate Twist. Strawberry/Lemon Swirl.

Life is all about choices. Make the most of the important ones. Go to Gene’s Ice Cream. Then trust your stomach.
